Turn Your Pet's Photo Into a Brick Mosaic Portrait

By BrickTuned ·

A framed brick mosaic portrait, rebuilt stud by stud from a photo

Your pet's face, rebuilt stud by stud. A brick mosaic portrait turns a favourite photo into wall art: up close it's pixel art you can touch, and from across the room it's unmistakably your dog, cat, horse or hamster.

Mosaics are new at BrickTuned and still in beta, and you can preview yours live before you order. Here's how it works and how to get the best result.

How a brick mosaic portrait works

We take your photo and rebuild it in brick colours on a flat baseplate, one stud at a time. Each stud is one "pixel", so the bigger the mosaic, the more detail it can hold. Fur texture, eye shine and the outline of ears and whiskers all come through at the larger sizes.

Choose your size

  • 32 × 32 studs (about 10 inches): a compact portrait for a desk or shelf, from C$79.
  • 48 × 48 studs (about 15 inches): our most popular balance of detail and size, C$149.
  • 64 × 64 studs (about 20 inches): the most detail, made for the wall, C$249.

Prices are introductory while mosaics are in beta and may change.

Pick a colour style

  • Full colour: your pet's real coat colours, matched to the closest brick colours.
  • Black & white: a classic, gallery-style look that works with any room.
  • Sepia: warm vintage tones, lovely for a memorial portrait of a pet who's passed.

The best photos for a pet portrait

  • Get close. Faces look best filling most of the frame. Crop out background clutter if you can.
  • Use soft, even light. Daylight near a window beats a flash, which can make eyes glow.
  • Get down to their eye level. Photos taken from above make pets look smaller and further away.
  • Look for contrast. A dark dog on a light background (or the opposite) reads more clearly in bricks.
  • Pick sharp over cute. A slightly less perfect pose that's in focus beats a blurry one.

Try it with your own photo

On our Mosaics & art page, upload your photo and watch the preview update as you switch sizes and colour styles. When you're happy, add it to your cart with your notes, such as what to crop or which pet is which in a group photo.

Prefer a softer look?

We also make 3D-printed charcoal art panels from the same photo: very thin layers of filament from near-black to white, so the shades blend like a charcoal drawing with real raised texture. Panels start from C$39.
